March 21, 2025:  W3C Web Fonts WG has been rechartered to continue its work developing specifications that allow the interoperable deployment of downloadable fonts on the Web. The Working Group has published the revised text of the Working Draft of the "Incremental Font Transfer" recommendation, and made substantive updates to the IFT explainer.


July 9, 2024:  W3C Web Fonts WG publishes updated text of the Working Draft of the "Incremental Font Transfer" recommendation, along with the article that explains  important aspects of this new technology and major design changes compared to  previously published version. 


April 2024: MPEG Press Release:  MPEG reaches First Milestone for Fifth Edition of Open Font Format. The development and publication of the fifth edition ISO/IEC 14496-22 Committee Draft standard signifies a major technological breakthrough - the result of many years of hard work of MPEG Font Format subgroup developing new capabilities to enable creation of fonts that can support full Unicode repertoire and make it possible to cover all world languages and writing systems.


January 26, 2022:  The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award  for “Standardization of Font Technology for Custom Downloadable Fonts and Typography for Web and TV Devices”.


January 2022: W3C Web Fonts WG publishes First Public Working Draft of the "Incremental Font Transfer via Range Request" Recommendation.


September 2021: W3C Web Fonts WG publishes First Public Working Draft of the "Incremental Font Transfer" Recommendation.


April 2021: MPEG Press Release – MPEG promotes 2nd Amendment of Open Font Format to the Committee Draft status


March 2021:  Google offers financial support for continued font technology standardization 


October 2020: W3C Web Fonts WG publishes “PFE Evaluation Report”


June 2020: ISO Publication of Amendment 1 of the ISO/IEC 14496-22:2019 “Open Font Format”


January 2020: MPEG Press Release – MPEG promotes Amendment of Open Font Format to the final stage


January 2019: ISO Publication of ISO/IEC 14496-22:2019 “Open Font Format” (4th edition)


March 2018: W3C WOFF 2.0 Media Advisory – W3C’s WOFF 2.0 significantly improves compression efficiency and lowers network bandwidth in fast decompression of font data
